R18 CABLE DRUM WAGON 1953-1971

The Cable Drum wagon used the same wagon body as the R17 Bolster wagon. Running numbers and variants are the same as that wagon, so can be found under "R17 Bolster Wagon". The cable drums were first issued with pegs that fitted into lugs on the flat wagon. When the 1962 brown wagon was being produced, the drums were held in place by rubber bands, as the lugs were now missing on the flat wagon.
The first drums had cables wound around the drums, but wanting to keep down production costs, Triang made the drums closed (as can be seen on the left).

With the withdrawal of the R17 Bolster wagon at the end of 1971, also meant the end of the R18 Cable Drum Wagon, as both wagons used the same body. The replacement 1970s green wagon (R676) never carried cable drums. Although the R17 bolster wagon was shown in the catalogue once more in 1973 to clear stocks, the R18 variant was not repeated.
